Brown Paper Packages Tied Up With String

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

One of the most exciting things I’ve done in my busy time hiding (working) away from you all was to compose the music for Kazzum’s wonderful family show Brown Paper Packages.

It’s been a lovely process, throughout which the whole cast and crew have been amazing.

The show is based around 3 giant boxes each with a character inside. Each character symbolises the 3 complementary aspects of a perfect friend. It’s a truly magical show with enough audience participation to keep the kids happy without detracting from its real content.

Kazzum are brilliant at non-patronising, age-appropriate theatre and this is no exception.

The beautiful set design was by Sofie Layton and the creation and direction of the show was by Daryl Beeton and Nickie Wildin.

Here are a couple of samples of the music.

Your next chance to see it will be this weekend, on Saturday 4th August at Hackney Town Hall Square and Sunday 5th August in Newham (call 020 7749 1123 for details of both days).

2010 6 (The Angel)

Monday, April 26th, 2010

This is the sixth in the 2010 series of tracks. This song has developed from an idea I had over a month ago. The writing and building of the track has been a slower process than the previous 2010 songs for various different reasons that I am happy to go on and on about if any of you ask.

I have also added my version of Chris T-T’s Ankles to the Music Player.

LYRICS:

2010 6 (The Angel)

Clipped wings and sapphire eyes

cover woe – flawless disguise.

Locked away, swallowed the key

as a preference to being free.

From inside looking out through glass,

distorted scenes are photographed

by a man-like shape, statue-still.

Angel of the castle, castle on the hill.

Stacked around the walls are skeletons,

mortals misunderstood his burden.

Rock and earth and stick and stone

branches criss-cross skull and bone.

Self-inflicted wingless watcher

spies Beauty but he will not touch her;

for he knows his yen to kill.

Angel of the castle, the castle on the hill.

Disenchanted wood casts shadows in the breeze,

Beauty calls while dancing between trees:

“Oh, Angel do not lock yourself away

for there are many tasks for you to do today…

…Souls across the world have gone astray

and there is fun outside and games to play,

for you alone can heal their ill.

Oh, Angel of the castle, castle on the hill.”

Come out to play, Angel. It’s a lovely day, Angel. Let your wings grow again, you will be whole again.

Come outside we’ll walk, Angel. You can laugh and talk, Angel. Let your wings grow again, you will be whole again.

The spirit in his home, the tower,

overlooks science and nature.

Vantage point, truth exposed,

Devil inside the details transposed.

Running fast through the Banquet Hall.

Cut his hair, clothes they fall.

Drank the water till he had his fill.

Angel of the castle, the castle on the hill.

Outstretched wings and fierce eyes

cover woe – flawless disguise.

Locked away until ready;

repairs his heart, prepare his body.

From inside out the shattered glass;

upon the wind flew the photographs

and that man-like shape on window-sill.

Angel of the castle, the castle on the hill.

Strength and grace and majesty

trust self-powered prophecy.

Hear the voices, see the smiles,

shades and colour of Beauty’s wiles.

Eyes aglow as he takes the leap,

faith’s easy to find but hard to keep.

He is brave enough to feel the thrill.

Angel of the castle, the castle on the hill.

Angel of the castle, the castle on the hill.

2010 5

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

Here’s the lyrics to a new song 2010 5 I wrote today.

It is inspired by Mark Linkous (9th September 1962-6th March 2010) and is dedicated to all of you who sometimes feel that life is too much.

-

Of love and loss, of life and choice.

The joy and pain, graphic remains.

Strength and fiction, fear or addiction.

Of silk and wire, of blood and fire.

Of loss and love, of choice and life.

——

She fills herself with plans and thoughts, she fills herself, reasons and cause.

She’s armed, she can now take aim.

She’s found a way to enjoy pain.

——

Of spells and cost, of love and loss.

The text and voice, of life and choice.

Of panic and speed, the pace you need.

Of tears and sin, this mess you’re in.

Of ink and milk, of wire and silk.

——

She fills herself with plans and thoughts, she fills herself, reasons and cause.

She’s armed, she can now take aim.

She’s found a way to enjoy pain.

——

And all things gone

And all things passed

And all things won

And no things last

-

And all things done

And all things new

And all things sung

And all things you

——

She fills herself with plans and thoughts, she fills herself, reasons and cause.

She’s armed, she can now take aim.

She’s found a way to enjoy pain.

——

Of love and loss, of life and choice.

The joy and pain, graphic remains.

Strength and fiction, fear or addiction.

Of silk and wire, of blood and fire.

Of loss and love, of choice and life.

2010 4 (The Crush List)

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Wow! What an amazing night. I’ll do a proper blog about it as soon as I can get my head round it all.

Upon request, here are the lyrics for

2010 4 (The Crush List):

Talk too much, Think too much, Care too much, Drink too much

It’s like chocolate, like crack. So just take it, you can lie back.

When you’re craven the words are lost, with their meaning all filled with lust.

and you Talk too much, you Think too much, you Care, Care too much, and you Drink too much

Never wanted so much for yourself, gotta focus on nobody else, so fuck discretion and lose respect. Misdirection on an unsafe bet.

So don’t Talk too much, don’t Think too much, don’t dare Care too much, but we’ll always Drink too much

On Monday 10th August I played Blang! at London’s infamous 12 Bar Club. I was blown away by the response. For those of you who couldn’t be there, why not?!! But here are some clips of the night. Enjoy. x

Fourth Plinth Politics

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

As part of Anthony Gormley’s One & Other project, my big brother had an hour slot on Tuesday 29th July. I tracked his preparations online through his Tweets and went down to the plinth to join the CROWD!

You can watch the hour again here. Chris didn’t censor himself and stood with integrity. This was a brilliant opportunity for Chris to not just “preach to the converted” but reach a wider politically mixed audience. I just hope someone in power was listening.

Of course, my favourite was Plague on Both Your Houses which, although written a few years ago, is accurate and relevant every time you pick up a paper and read of any type of religious war and the innocent victims.

Listening Skills

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

In my search for some inspiration I was pointed in the direction of some really really great artists:

James Yuill: myspace/jamesyuill who does these really sweet songs mixing electronica and acoustic instrumentation. Proper good photos too like geek-chic extraordinaire.

Holy Fuck: whose album LP on spotify is just amazing, insane, electro, rock. Hardcore band this.

——————————————————————————————————————-

I’ve also been re-listening to Metronomy on spotify, who really needs no introduction

and Gagarin (myspace/ggrn) who does weird electronic soundscapey stuff with beats and sounds – also is part of Raf and O who are great.

That’s it for now folks – happy listening!
